The ANC Caucus in Parliament is saddened by the passing of anti-apartheid activist and former Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Cde Ebrahim Ismail Ebrahim, after a long illness.

Born on 1 July 1937, he joined the liberation movement as a youth activist in 1952 and participated in the Congress of the People Campaign, which adopted the Freedom Charter in 1955. He was an ex-combatant of Umkhonto we Sizwe who was arrested and charged under the Sabotage Act in 1961 and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment at Robben Island. He was released in 1979 and went to exile on instruction of the ANC in 1980. 

A former Member of Parliament in the National Assembly, he served as Deputy Dirco Minister from 2009 until 2017 and also served as the parliamentary counselor to the Leader of Government Business (Deputy President) for a portion of the Fifth Parliament. Cde Ebrahim was an active Member of the ANC National Executive Committee Sub-Committee on International Relations.

Cde Ebi was committed to the liberation movement and the ANC, he was a great teacher and mentor to many young activists within the liberation movement and his leadership and dedication to doing what is right remains inspirational. 

The ANC Caucus sends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, Comrades and loved ones of the late stalwart. May his revolutionary soul rest in eternal peace.
