The Office of the ANC Chief Whip in Parliament welcomes back all ANC Caucus members and staff, hoping that we all had a wonderful festive season with family and friends and we all landed safely in 2020.

As we start the new working year, we implore all to heed the call of action from the Honourable President Cyril Ramaphosa. In his address at the ANC January 8th Statement held on 11 January 2020 in Kimberley, Comrade President Ramaphosa said “In the year ahead, we must make irreversible progress in building a united, ethical and strong ANC that is able to effectively serve the people of South Africa”.

As outlined in the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) January 8th Statement document, we call on young people and students to lead the skills revolution, and to be the champions of innovation and entrepreneurship.

We also call on public servants to; diligently serve the people of South Africa; to fully implement the electoral mandate while remaining non-partisan; to ensure that public funds are not wasted or stolen or unused; and to build a capable and developmental state.

In line with the Freedom Charter and the decisions of the ANC 54th National Conference, we must strive towards achieving the priorities that were outlined by the President during the January 8th Statement, namely:

• to build a capable state that serves all the people.
• to build a united and cohesive society.
• to pursue investment, jobs and inclusive growth.
• to have an effective land reform programme.
• to eradicate poverty and improve people’s lives.
• to provide education and skills for a changing world
• build social cohesion and safe communities.
• to build a better Africa and better world.

As we start the Back to School Campaign for the 2020 school year, the ANC-led government remains committed to improving our country’s education system and skills that are in demand in an ever-changing world, guided by the Freedom Charter which states that “‘The Doors of Learning and Culture Shall be Opened”.

We must speed up the implementation of the three-stream curriculum model of basic education to provide three educational streams – academic, technical-vocational and technical-occupational for learners to make an easy transition from school to colleges and universities and to be educated and trained in a way that meets the skills and labour demands of the country’s economy.

We urge all Members of Parliament, Caucus staff and South Africans to work together in achieving the goals we have set to make our country grow. This is going to be a testing year as we prepare for the National General Council and Local Government Elections 2021.

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip wishes all a productive year ahead as we advance ANC commitments in serving our people.
